Welcome to Arthur Hapgood Elementary School!
Hapgood Elementary School has a long-standing tradition of excellence. We continue to explore new educational ideas and trends to improve our effectiveness with children. There is a strong emphasis on Common Core State Standards (CCSS); Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS); science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); and Project Based Learning. Our goal is to sustain an academic program that will be without comparison in our county and beyond. This means expanding intervention and enrichment activities before, during and after school to meet the needs of our unique student community.
The Dual Immersion District Program is a welcome addition to our school campus. The Lompoc Unified School District (LUSD) Language Academy Program thrives with a 90:10 Dual Immersion model. With this model, 90 percent of instruction is taught in Spanish and 10 percent in English, starting in kindergarten and first grade. Instruction in English increases each year until 50 percent of instruction is in English and Spanish, achieved in fifth and sixth grade. Classes consist of one-third native Spanish speakers, one-third native English speakers and one-third bilingual students.
Hapgood scholars continue to make gains in our Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) scores. From 2015 to 2018 the scaled scores result in an increase in overall English language arts (ELA)/literature of 42 points, overall math 46 points, socioeconomically disadvantaged (SED) ELA/literature 44 points, SED math 49 points, English learner (EL) ELA/literature 22 points, EL math 39 points.
